I think repeatedly posing the question is just as important as having the discussion, or even offering the all the pertinent answers that we've discovered individually and collectively. This conversation changes and renews itself constantly, and if anything it makes this an exhilarating moment to have something to contribute. Speaking of which, I think Arin in particular has some amazing points to offer on this topic. I got the chance to see Arin speak recently at Film Independent's Filmmaker Forum in Los Angeles, and I was completely inspired by his approach to filmmaking, and his ideas about distribution. If anything I felt that his answers and questions, had spawned new answers and questions in my own mind, and that is always a good sign I was covering the Forum for LAist.com, and was sure to include a photo, and a segment on Arin's panel discussion in my highlights of the event for that very reason. You can check out that article at... http://laist.com/2009/10/14/its_a_wrap_final_thoughts_on_this_y.php

I'd like to echo what Linda Nelson said so well above, about "so many great alternative theatrical and broadcast options taking shape." There definitely is a viable market for good indie films, and that market is expanding as we pour energy into making it grow through connecting with each other. It's as if each independent filmmaker is attempting to blow up this huge, iridescent balloon of creativity, and each of us can help him or her through our own energy, by simply reaching out and laying a hand on that filmmaker's shoulder. The more we help each other, the more we help ourselves. Our collective and ever growing ability to connect with each other will help everyone in the end. Thanks to Arin and all of the innovative, like minded young filmmakers out there who are inspiring me at the moment, I'm beginning to feel that everything is within reach for all of us.

We all just need to make the best films we can make, with the best production value that technology will allow. Tell a great story, use the best actors you can find and learn how to build an audience for your film. There are so many incredible tools out there now and with the global market reachable from your laptop, there's no reason that we can't get our films seen. We have to take more responsibility for getting our films out there. With cameras like RED and tapeless workflows, production costs are at an all time low. You can make a film that looks like it cost $3,000,000 for under $100,000, if you search out talented collaborators. This is a reasonable and recoupable budget for an indie film. There are so many great alternative theatrical and broadcast options taking shape, I'm confident that there is a viable market for good indie films.
